Short Story 26: The Journey of a Pair of School Socks
.
Inside an old locker in the school dormitory, a pair of white socks lay tucked among other clothes. They weren’t just ordinary fabric stitched together—they carried stories, emotions, and experiences no one ever expected.
Since they belonged to Afiq, a sixth-grade student who had just moved into the boarding school, they had witnessed countless moments. On the first day, they were crisp and clean, dancing on the dining hall floor, running across the football field, and sometimes dragging through dusty dormitory corridors. Every step Afiq took was a journey for them.
But not every experience was joyful. Some days, Afiq ran back to his room with sore feet after sports practice. Some nights, they were soaked in tears when he struggled with a bad test result. At times, they sat abandoned in a pile of unwashed clothes because Afiq was too busy to clean them.
One rainy afternoon, after an intense match, Afiq walked back with slow, tired steps. His socks—once bright and new—were now thin, worn out, and even had a small hole at the heel. “We’ve been together for a long time,” Afiq murmured as he held them gently. Tomorrow would be their last day in use because his mother had sent new ones.
That night, before sleeping, Afiq took the old socks from his bag, running his fingers over the fabric that had gone through so much with him. Memories of running, falling, crying, and laughing flashed through his mind. With gratitude, he neatly folded them and placed them in his drawer, not as discarded items but as a treasured keepsake.
Though no longer worn, the pair of socks remained silent witnesses to a young student’s journey of growing up, facing challenges, and learning life’s lessons. To Afiq, they weren’t just socks—they were a part of his childhood, an experience he would never forget.
