Short Story 41: I Am a Reference Book
Short Story 41: I Am a Reference Book
.
I am a Science reference book, thick, sturdy, and filled with fascinating facts about planets, animals, and simple experiments. I was printed in a factory in Bangi and placed carefully on the shelf of a boarding school library. There I waited, ready to feed young minds with knowledge.
One day, a quiet, thoughtful student named Haris borrowed me. He was in Form 1 and loved learning. Page after page, Haris studied diagrams on the water cycle, the human digestive system, and the solar system. I felt alive in his hands.
But Haris did more than just read. He wrote notes and drew diagrams in his workbook, always with care. I noticed something unusual in his writing... sometimes he paused, sometimes his notebook had teardrops. I realized—he missed home.
One night, he studied the chapter on the human heart. He whispered, “Just like my father’s heart... it was weak, but he stayed strong.” That’s when I understood—I wasn’t just a reference book. I was helping a boy connect science with life, facts with feelings.
Then Haris fell ill.
He was taken to hospital, and I was returned to the shelf. Many students borrowed me, but none gave me the same warmth. Weeks passed... I missed him.
Until one day, pale but smiling, Haris walked back into the library. He ran his fingers across my spine and whispered, “Let’s keep going.” His spirit had returned—and his dream to become a doctor grew stronger with every page he flipped.
