Short Story 42: I Am a Canteen Spoon

Short Story 42: I Am a Canteen Spoon

.

My name is Spoon. Not just any spoon. I live in the canteen of a boarding school, where children grow, learn, and dream. I’m made of stainless steel—strong, durable, and once shiny.

I was born in a metal factory in Perak, then sent to this school with my friends: forks, knives, and other spoons. On my first day, I felt proud. A student named Hasmah picked me up to eat chicken porridge. Her hands were gentle, and she washed me after eating. Since then, I became her favourite spoon.

Hasmah is an orphan. She rarely buys expensive food, but she’s always grateful. I heard her tell her friends how much she missed her late mother, who used to cook porridge for her when she was sick. Every time she ate porridge, she would pause quietly. I knew I was her bridge to those memories.

But one day, I got lost. I accidentally fell into the trash bin. No one noticed. Days turned into weeks. I lay behind the canteen, rusty and forgotten. I missed Hasmah. I missed the laughter of students, the smell of nasi lemak, and the joy of recess.

Months later, a canteen worker found me while cleaning an old storage room. He washed me and placed me back on the rack. That day, Hasmah came to buy chicken porridge. Her hand reached for me, and her eyes widened.

“This spoon… it looks like my old one,” she whispered.

She held me tightly, as if hugging a memory. Tears welled in her eyes, but she smiled. I knew then—even though I’m just a spoon—I carry meaning in someone’s life.

Now, I’m used again. No longer shiny, but full of stories. I’m not just a utensil. I’m a witness to love, loss, and hope.

And I’ll stay here, waiting to be part of another child’s journey.
